It is once again Sunday, which means it is time for another reading roundup!
I read three books this week. Getting back into the flow of reading after having a couple hard weeks!
Here are my thoughts on the books I read this week!
Learned by Heart by Emma Donoghue
Genre(s): Historical Fiction
My rating: 4 stars
Okay so I am not a historical fiction lover, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.
I did really enjoy this book, but it was SO SLOW and there weren’t really chapters so it kind of felt like it was dragging, even though this book was just over 300 pages long.
With that being said, it was still a fun time and it was a sapphic romance set in a time in which that was “forbidden” so it automatically gets a decent score. If you enjoy Jane Austen (and are gay), I think you would enjoy this a lot.
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller
My rating: 3.75 stars
I know so many people who LOVED this book, and it was good. However, the plot twist was so obvious it was kind of painful for me.
I will say, I have read over 60 thrillers just this year, so I have gotten pretty good at figuring out plot twists, so you may very well not get the twist, but I got it about a quarter into the book, which kind of ruined the thrill for me.
It was well written and I can see what all the fuss is about, this one just wasn’t for me, and that’s okay.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Genre(s):Classics, Dystopian, Literary, Science Fiction
My rating: 3.75 stars
I am sure everyone knows that this book is BLEAK as hell. And it is. I read this book in middle school and decided to reread it as an adult.
I will say, the formatting of this book was really irritating and hard to follow outside of the size of the text which I did enjoy. There are no quotations and most of the time I do okay, but in this book it was so hard to follow when the dad was speaking versus the son at many points.
It is beautiful and daunting and sad and if you enjoy dystopias, this is a quintessential one. I am NOT a big dystopian person, but still enjoyed this book despite my critiques and it being outside of my general genres.
What book(s) did you read this week? Let me know in the comments!
