Happy Sunday, y’all, and welcome to another weekly reading roundup!
This week was a slow reading week because I took a short vacation (this is the first time in over 4 years I have taken more than two days off in a row) so I was really soaking that up!
That being said, I did still finish four books which is still a good amount!
Book #1: This Delicious Death by Kayla Cottingham
Genre(s): Horror, Young Adult
My rating: 4.75 stars
This was such a fun read from start to finish! Was it a tad predictable? Yes. But so fun nonetheless.
After a bunch of flops horror wise, I am glad to finally have a horror I enjoyed, and I think this is just my sign to read queer and/or women authored horror because the horrors I have ended up hating have all been written by cishet men, so maybe it is time to drop those off my TBR!
This book is a YA, so obviously it won’t be as gory or grotesque as an adult horror, but it was a blast to read!
Rainbow High by Alex Sanchez
Genre(s): Romance, Young Adult
My rating: 4.75 stars
The second book in my reread of the Rainbow trilogy, this was better than the first, and you can tell Sanchez improved!
It is YA and very much dated, but it brought me back to middle school (in a good way, which is hard to do!) and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am excited to pick up the third and final book!
The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Genre(s): Mystery
My rating: 3 stars
This book was just painfully okay, which is disappointing because so many people told me to read it.
There is a gnarly amount of fatphobia in the first 100 pages. The book dragged on for what felt like forever, and it was just overly convoluted and felt like Turton was trying to be clever, and it just didn’t land with me.
If you liked this book, I am glad. If you are considering reading it, I would suggest skipping it and finding another mystery to read.
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas
Genre(s): Horror, Historical, Thriller
My rating: 4.5 stars
I got this as my Book of the Month pick in August and I am definitely glad I did!
This is definitely more romance heavy than horror heavy, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! It is not my usual cup of tea (I am not a big historical fiction fan) but it had beautiful writing, a romance I was rooting for, and some eerie, creepy creatures and vibes.
I am looking forward to picking up this author’s other book, The Hacienda.
What books did you read this week? Let me know in the comments!
