I am a firm defender of reading young adult books as an adult! They are fun, easy to get through, and offer a nice break from adult fiction when I need one!
I have read quite a few YA books in the last year, and I decided to share five recommendations with you all!
Book #1: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult
My rating: 5 stars
Thoughts: Tracy Deonn has quickly become one of the best at the craft. Legendborn (and its sequel, Bloodmarked) were so tense and gripping and I am cursing the sky every day we don’t get a third book announced. I am in love with this story and I cannot wait to consume everything and anything Deonn writes. If you love low fantasy (fantasy that takes place in the real world with fantastical elements) please do yourself a favor and read these books.
Book #2: Little Monsters by Kara Thomas
Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller, Young Adult
My rating: 5 stars
Thoughts: I have liked every book of Kara Thomas’ (except her newest release) but Little Monsters is by far her best work. I did not see the plot twists coming at all and I was so invested in the storyline of this book. It has teen angst, jealousy, the messy dynamics of teenage girls and sisterhood, all things I love reading about. If you like YA thrillers, and you haven’t read this, please do!
Book #3: Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult
My rating: 4.75 stars
Thoughts: A sapphic novel that revolves around Cinderella and her rebel offspring? Sign me up! This book was sad and heartwarming and our main characters kicked butt! I was skeptical to pick this book up, but I am so glad I did! There is a reason Bayron is so popular: she is an incredible storyteller! If you like feminist retelling and revenge stories, this book is for you!
Book #4: The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre(s): Mystery, Young Adult
My rating: 4.75 stars
Thoughts: I recently read this (and the other two books published so far!) and I loved it! I will admit, the next two books are better, but the first one is definitely worth your time! On top of being a great, unique story, this book also has big words and small chapters (two things I LOVE in books!). If you are looking for an interesting story, love solving puzzles and playing games, you should definitely give this book a try!
Book #5: Trouble Girls by Julia Lynn Rubin
Genre(s): Contemporary Fiction, Romance, Young Adult
My rating: 4 stars
Thoughts: Another sapphic novel for the list! This book started out fast and kept a decent pace all the way throughout! If you like stories about feminine rage, revenge, and starting a new life, this book is for you! There are definitely some flaws in the story, but overall I really enjoyed reading this, and was invested in the characters Rubin created.
