Books as a Treat: A Big Book Haul!

I had a really rough week last week, and in typical fashion for me, I bought books about it. I am a big believer in “treat yourself” sometimes (in moderation!) and I decided to get myself 16 new books! I also tend to budget a little tighter in the summer to be able to treat myself in September and October, as those are typically my hardest months of the year.
Five of these books are from my Book of the Month and Aardvark Book Club subscriptions, one was a pre-order from Amazon, and the rest I got via Book Outlet!
Evil Eye by Etaf Rum
Genre(s): Literary Fiction
This was my main Book of the Month pick for September 2023. I had heard a little bit about it, but I chose it because the short description BOTM spotlighted perfectly tied into the conversations I have been having with one of my partners. It felt serendipitous.
The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller
I actually already read this! I picked it up the day after it was delivered! You can read my thoughts on it in my reading roundup from last week!
None of This is True by Lisa Jewell
Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller
Another BOTM pick, this time an add on (this was an August BOTM pick!). I have already read this, and I have mixed feelings, but overall I think it was a solid thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! More of my feelings to come on Sunday for my weekly reading roundup!
Bridge by Lauren Beukes
Genre(s):Speculative Fiction, Thriller
As with all of my Aardvark Book Club picks thus far, I had never heard of this book. I am really excited to read this as it is a thriller that tackles grief, which sounds like the perfect book for me!
Learned by Heart by Emma Donoghue
Genre(s): Historical Fiction
I am not a historical fiction person, but when I saw this on Aardvark, I saw “sapphic historical fiction” and I was SOLD. If it is gay, I am there!
Room by this author has been on my TBR for a year, and I hear amazing things about her, so I am sure I will enjoy this book.
All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody, C.L. Herman
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult
I really enjoyed The Drowning Summer by C.L. Herman, and I have heard amazing things about Amanda Foody, so when I saw this on Book Outlet, I just had to pick it up! Excited to dive in!
Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter
Genre(s): Thriller
So many people have recommended Karin Slaughter as an author to me, and I decided there is no time like the present to start reading her stuff! Book Outlet had this one for a good price, so hopefully I enjoy it as much as folks I have talked to think I will!
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
Genre(s):Fantasy, Young Adult
I have heard that this is a cozy, creative fantasy book and I have really enjoyed similar books in the past. This is another book I have never seen a negative review for, so I have high hopes for this one!
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult
Another YA fantasy I have seen majority positive reviews of, and I cannot wait to see if I agree with the hype!
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
Genre(s):Fantasy, Young Adult
I have heard nothing but amazing things about this fantasy novel, so I decided to finally give it a try! I don’t really know the plot but again, I like to go into books with as little info as possible!
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda
Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller
I read The Only Survivors by this author earlier this year, and when I saw this book on Book Outlet, I jumped at the chance to get it! I am really excited to see if this is as good! =
Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda
Genre(s): Literary Fiction, Thriller
I got this recommended to me when I told a friend of mine I bought A Certain Hunger. I hear the vibes are fairly similar, and I am a HUGE vampire person. The good, the bad, and the cringe-y, hand it to me, I will read it!
Vladimir by Julia May Jones
Genre(s): Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
Honestly, I have NO idea what this book is about, which is how I prefer to read! I have heard mixed reviews, but I am hoping I have a good time reading it!
Dead Flip by Sarah Farizan
Genre(s):
I pre-ordered the paperback of this book, which was released today (and as of posting this, it may already be in my hands!) because I prefer reading paperbacks to hardcovers as much as possible. I have heard a lot of great things about this book. I first heard of it while beginning to compile books for the LGBTQ+ Book Database for my day job (you should check that out, maybe). I love horror, but have been disappointed with cishet man horror, so I have been scoping the internet to compile woman authored and/or queer authored horror, and this fit the bill perfectly!
Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments!
